Technician, Animal Care & Research Support
Primary Purpose: To provide lab support services to animal facilities supported by ACRS.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Animal Care Manager, this position performs support services to animal facilities across campus. The duties are broad in scope and are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures, institutional policies and guidelines. This position works in conventional, Biosafety Level 2 and barrier animal suites/facilities and is exposed to animal dander, waste, bedding and some unpleasant odors. Subject to dress code and traffic pattern restrictions. Moderate to heavy lifting is required.
Typical Duties:
• Operation and maintenance of cage washer, bottle washer, autoclave, washer & dryer, and floor scrubber
• Provides wash-up of soiled animal caging
• Preparation and sterilization of clean cages
• Manages lab coat and linens laundering
• Animal deliveries
• Performs routine cleaning of procedure rooms, labs, and surgery rooms as assigned
• Ensures supplies – bedding, enrichment, gas, chemicals, consumables, etc. are maintained, reordered, and restocked as required
• Waste disposal
• Eye wash and shower testing
• Assists in the set-up, testing and repair of equipment in the facilities as directed
• Assisting with animal cage changes as required
Qualifications
Education: Completion of the Medical Device Reprocessing technician program is preferred, or minimum Grade 12 and relevant experience. Certificates of completion and current standing for WHMIS, Biowaste training, Biosafety, Laboratory Safety, Animal Ethics and Rodent Handling are required for the job but may be taken immediately after starting if lacking.
Experience: One year of animal facility, laboratory support and/or technical experience is preferred.
Licenses: Must hold and maintain a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Skills: Effective English reading, verbal and written communication skills; effective interpersonal and communication skills; time management and task prioritization; demonstrated ability to work as part of team as well as with minimal supervision; physically fit to be able to lift heavy and bulky objects and to stand long periods of time; ability and desire to learn new tasks and procedures quickly.
