Role: Registered Veterinary Technician – Cornwall (VT’s working toward their RVT accreditation will be considered)
Location: Cornwall Animal Centre, Cornwall, ON

Veterinary Technician Impact Statement

As a Registered Veterinary Technician, you play a crucial role in decision making and support for the overall well-being of animals, both in our centres, and in foster care. At the end of each day, you will leave your shift having a sense of fulfilment, knowing that your expertise in terms of medical advice has been a key contributor in enriching the lives of the animals in our care. A Typical Day
• Coach and mentor staff to maintain standards of care based on the Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters and Shelter Health and Wellness policies and protocols
• Liases with local veterinary clinics and Shelter Health and Wellness Veterinarians to provide open communication and a medical relationship with the Centre.
• Leads daily rounds to ensure various animal needs are met.
• Performs intake examinations on incoming animals and initiates veterinary guidance if required.
• Prepares and administers medications and vaccines under direction of the veterinarian.
• Ensures ACCs and other team members are prepared to give medications accurately and safely in their absence.
• Ensures the maintenance of accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures, and behaviour history.
• Administer or oversee treatments and diagnostics as prescribed by the veterinarian
• Seeks veterinary advice and transports animals to vet clinic as needed.
• Performs thorough physical examinations on animals in care for extended periods of time and those that have any concerns.
• Grooming duties as necessary.
• Ensure adequate supply of supplies including pharmaceuticals are always on hand.
• Ensure prescriptions have been accurately dispensed.
• Primary point of contact for clients seeking information related to medical care for their animals pre-foster/adoption when CCR is unavailable or unable to explain complicated details of care plan.
• Providing care and enrichment for our animals including, feeding, exercising, playing and/or other engagement activities.

Qualifications and Experience
• Veterinary Technician Diploma (RVT accreditation an asset)
• 1-3 years’ experience in a veterinary technician role
• Excellent communication skills
• Team player
• Supervisory/leadership experience and asset
• Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs) and control up to 45 kg (100lbs)
• Valid G drivers licence with the ability to provide a clear driver’s abstract to support animal transfers
• Open availability including weekdays, weekends, and holidays
