Primary Purpose: To provide technical assistance to the Rehabilitation service of the Veterinary Medical Centre which involves the provision of assistance for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on animals presented to the service. This position also includes assisting with technical instruction to veterinary undergraduate/graduate students and veterinary technologist students.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager Health Services, this position involves handling and restraint of animals, and can be extremely physically demanding. The technician will be required to be in the underwater treadmill with patients. Heavy lifting is required, although a ceiling hoist and lift table may be utilized. Subject to some unpleasant odors, dress code, frequent interruptions, multi-tasking, and traffic pattern restrictions. Subject to stress as a result of working in complex/emergent environment with a wide range of responsibilities and highly fluctuating workload. Shift premiums where applicable. Hours of work are subject to change and requires a shift rotation including a late shift.
Typical Duties/Accountabilities: Under the supervision of senior technicians and clinicians, the incumbent assists with all technical parts of the rehabilitation service, including handling and restraint of animals, maintaining accurate medical records, conducting rehabilitation treatments, maintenance and recovery from sedation or anesthesia of animals undergoing diagnostics or treatments, performing patient examinations, ensuring quality patient care, and writing/typing detailed discharge notes and treatment orders. It will also include assisting with technical instruction to veterinary undergraduate/graduate students and veterinary technologist students.
Responsible for tracking, ordering and maintenance of the facility, supplies, equipment and instrumentation. This includes maintenance of appropriate water quality of underwater treadmills.
Duties also include implementation of orders issued by the veterinarians, scheduling of appointments, performing RVT appointments, coordinating internal and external referrals, communication with clients, referring vets and all departments of the VMC. Position may also function as a float throughout other areas of the hospital when service needs are down.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of a recognized veterinary technology program. Licensed or eligible to be licensed with the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technicians (SAVT) and the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA).
Experience: At least three years of experience in a small animal practice or hospital setting is preferred. Preference given to applicants with direct Rehabilitation experience. New graduates are welcome to apply and will be provided extensive training and mentorship. Phase and wage will be determined by experience. Previous experience in small animal rehabilitation is considered an asset.
Skills: Demonstrated strong technical skills in the various fields mentioned above; physical ability to perform therapeutic exercises and manual techniques with a variety of patients; ability to work without supervision; demonstrated initiative, independent & objective judgment and organizational skills; ability to maintain high standards of quality patient care in and out of the hospital; ability to handle animals during examination and administration of medications; sound decision making skills when deciding when to progress rehabilitation exercises or when patients require clinician re-evaluation; demonstrated interpersonal skills by offering support and direction to the interns, students and other VMC staff.
While applicants who meet the qualifications of a CUPE 1975 Phase 5 listed above will be given priority, we may also consider applicants who are not fully qualified but show an interest in learning and developing their skills. Successful applicants who do not meet our full qualifications may be offered the position at a lower classification (CUPE 1975 Phase 4 or CUPE 1975 Phase 3) and therefore a lower pay rate. We will provide training, support, and an opportunity to move to the fully qualified level.
A CUPE 1975 Phase 4 RVT will be under the supervision of a senior RVT, possess the education qualifications listed above, have 2 – 3 years direct experience in a veterinary practice or other veterinary college, and be able to competently perform basic and introductory duties independently. The salary range is CAD $23.35 - $30.61 per hour.
A CUPE 1975 Phase 3 RVT will be under the direct supervision of a senior RVT, possess the education qualifications listed above, have less than 2 years direct experience in a veterinary practice or other veterinary college (new grads welcome!), and be able to perform basic skills and duties that were achieved as a result of graduating from a recognized Veterinary Technology Program. The salary range is CAD $21.55 - $25.13 per hour
