About Toronto Wildlife Centre:
Toronto Wildlife Centre is the only wildlife centre in the Greater Toronto Area and the busiest in Canada. Up to 6,500 wild animals are admitted to the centre each year representing over 300 different species of wildlife.
Dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife, and to educating the public on wildlife-related issues; TWC was the first wildlife centre in Canada with a full veterinary hospital and is the only one with a dedicated Wildlife Rescue Program. Approximately 40,000 phone calls from the public are handled each year through TWC’s Wildlife Hotline.
As a registered charity, TWC relies primarily on donations from members of the public and like-minded organizations. Volunteers work in all areas of the centre from wildlife care to IT support.
Status: Temporary, Full – Time
Location: Currently located in Downsview Park (North York) with plans to move to the Rouge National Urban Park (Scarborough)
Start Date: October 2024
Compensation: Starting at $20 per hour, commensurate with experience
Job Summary
Toronto Wildlife Centre is looking for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to work with over 300 native Ontario species in a fully accredited veterinary hospital with full-time wildlife veterinary staff. This role combines wildlife medicine and wildlife rehabilitation and will have you involved with all aspects of animal care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assisting with animal triage and admissions
• Diagnostic imaging and lab work
• Veterinary nursing care
• Assisting with surgical and medical procedures, including anesthetic monitoring
• Hospital maintenance
• Maintaining medical records
• Coordinating patient daily care
• Developing rehabilitation plansOther duties as required
Experience and Qualifications :
• Registered veterinary technician (RVT)
• Ideal candidate has a minimum of 2 years clinical experience
• Previous work with zoo, wildlife or exotics is an asset, although not required
• Passion for wildlife medicine and conservation
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
• Strong problem-solving and leadership skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Rabies vaccinated with a current titreAvailable to work rotating weekends and holidays
Working Conditions
• Fast-paced office/hospital environment, with noise and the possibility of frequent interruptions
• This position requires working near materials and animals that may trigger allergic reactions
• Open office/hospital environment, with noise and frequent interruption
• Hours/shifts will fluctuate depending on job demands and includes shift work that includes weekends, early evenings and statutory holidaysRequired to walk on concrete floors in the building
